Display tools
These tools show pictures to the user inside the chat. Use them whenever the user asks to see pictures. Don't list URLs in text instead.
All three are read-only. If any id is missing, or belongs to someone else, the whole call fails.
display_image
Display a picture. Shows one picture.
| Argument | Type | Required |
|---|---|---|
id | string | Yes |
{
"type": "object",
"required": ["id"],
"properties": { "id": { "type": "string", "pattern": "^[A-Za-z0-9_-]{1,128}$" } }
}
UI resource: ui://auto/images/single
display_images_grid
Display pictures in a grid. Shows pictures in a responsive grid. Use it for most sets of more than one picture. Pass ids from list_images or search_images straight in.
| Argument | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
ids | array of strings, 1 to 100 | Yes | In the order to show them. |
{
"type": "object",
"required": ["ids"],
"properties": {
"ids": {
"type": "array",
"minItems": 1,
"maxItems": 100,
"items": { "type": "string", "pattern": "^[A-Za-z0-9_-]{1,128}$" }
}
}
}
UI resource: ui://auto/images/grid
display_images_carousel
Display pictures in a carousel. Shows pictures in a row the user swipes through. Best for a small set. For larger sets, use the grid.
Takes the same ids argument as display_images_grid.
UI resource: ui://auto/images/carousel
Output
All three return the same shape, in structuredContent and as JSON in a text block:
{
"layout": "grid",
"images": [
{
"id": "img_123",
"title": "A yellow tram climbing a narrow street at sunset.",
"url": "https://app.auto.inc/api/ext/v2/images/img_123/renditions/webp-medium?exp=...&sig=...",
"mimeType": "image/webp",
"capturedAt": "2026-04-12T18:22:05.000Z"
}
]
}
| Field | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
layout | "single" | "grid" | "carousel" | Which view to draw. |
images[].id | string | |
images[].title | string | null | The picture's title, or its description. |
images[].url | string | Signed. Works for 15 minutes. |
images[].mimeType | string | null | |
images[].capturedAt | string | null | ISO 8601. |
MCP App
Each display tool links to a UI resource in its _meta.ui.resourceUri. Clients that support MCP Apps load that resource in a sandboxed frame and pass it the tool result.
The view shows each picture as a card with its title and capture date:
- Single: one picture, up to 480 px tall.
- Grid: two, three or four columns, by width.
- Carousel: a row 480 px tall that snaps as you scroll.
Clicking a picture opens it full size. Escape closes it. An auto.inc button in the footer opens the Auto site.
The resource declares a content security policy that allows images from the Auto API host and https://storage.googleapis.com only.
Clients without MCP App support get the text block. They can show the signed urls as links or images.
